Cochrane's Winner

Leeds United spoiled Blackpool's unbeaten home record when they won a friendly game at Bloomfield Road by the only goal of the match. United played sound football without achieving anything outstanding. The forwards were never very impressive and thelr victory could be attributed, principally to an excellent defence, in which Holley was a tower of strength, and the brilliance of Swindin, who never made a mistake. At the last minute Blackpool decided not to play Dodds, and Finan never applied the punch which was required to smash a way through a cool and imperturbable defence. In the closing minutes, Lewis was switched to the centre from the wing, but it made no difference. Three-quarters, of the play took place in the Leeds half, and Swindin had many shots to deal with, but most of them were from long range, and rarely was he in difficulties. Hodgson never achieved anything spectacular in the Leeds forward line, the Blackpool defence being mostly troubled by Cochrane, who scored in the 60th minute. Ainsley built up some good moves, and in the fifth minute of the game he beat Roxburgh with a low shot; but the referee, after consulting a linesman, gave him off-side.

SWINDIN BARS BLACKPOOL'S PATH

LEEDS UNITED WIN BY ONLY GOAL

Blackpool were without Dodds (still unfit) which meant an adjustment of the forward line with Finan leading, Lewis on the left wing and Munro on the right. The referee was E.W. Baker (Manchester). The going was rather difficult on the hard ground and both sides stepped warily at the start. Blackpool worked one or two nice movements without much punch in them. Then Johnston broke away to get almost through before he lost control of the ball and jumped over the concrete wall surrounding the pitch as he tried to pull up. Finan, playing in his old place in the centre, worked out to the left and let fly with a grand left-foot shot a little wide. Leeds however were soon away, and Ainsley put the ball into the net from an offside position. It came at the end of a really first-class move that had the home defence rather baffled.

BLACKPOOL MISSES

Munro followed with a powerful shot that Swindin, the former Arsenal goalkeeper, held quite well, and then Blackpool seemed certain to lead when Finan broke away, to partly lose control of the ball with only the goalkeeper left. He got it again but his shot was from a difficult angle and went over the bar, a bad miss. There was another close call for Leeds with the Blackpool forwards clustered on the goal line. In fact, for a time the visitors were outplayed. Later Leeds rallied a great deal, but there was little power in their final touches. Once, for instance, Brown put the ball straight across the Blackpool goalmouth, but there was no one there to take the chance.

SERIES OF CORNERS

At the other end with the Leeds defence at sixes and sevens, Eastham miskicked when another glorious chance was waiting. That had been the main failing in both teams so far, though Blackpool at least displayed some semblance of power and forced a series of corners. Then Powell broke right through, easily tricking Hayward en route, but Roxburgh came out to meet him and held his point-blank drive. Lewis provided the best effort up to this point with a tremendous left-foot volley, which he followed with another of the same vintage. In this phase, Blackpool were certainly running rings round the Leeds defence and scoring efforts were frequent, including a low drive by Farrow that was luckily blocked. There were plenty of thrills, including an intensive raid by Leeds-during which Cochrane hit the side net with Roxburgh out of his goal-and several brilliant right wing moves by Blackpool.

HALF-TIME: BLACKPOOL 0 LEEDS UNITED 0

The teams changed round without an interval. There was plenty of bright football, almost as tense and competitive as in a League match. Once, Eastham, whose ball control was a feature of the game, broke clean away to have his close-range drivesaved brilliantly by Swindin. Again a dashing run by Lewis put Blair in position, and Swindin had the inside man's slanting drive behind.

SURPRISE GOAL

It was rather against the run of the game that Cochrane put Leeds in front after twenty minutesof the second half. There was a scrimmage in the Blackpool goalmouth, and while Roxburgh was out of position Cochrane put the ball over the line and into an empty net. Blackpool fell away badly later and could do nothing to pull back the deficit. On their second half showing, they deserved to lose their first game at home this season and their third at home or away.

RESULT: BLACKPOOL 0 LEEDS UNITED 1
